What are Bard and ChatGPT? : Their Uses and Differences

The world of artificial intelligence has come a long way from its inception in the mid-1,900s. In the last few decades, there have been huge leaps in the development of AI. Nowadays, AI is no longer limited to some research laboratories, instead, it is an everyday technology that is used by people all over the world. Phone assistants, search engines, and even device security systems utilize artificial intelligence today.

However, mankind is never content to stay in one place, they want to advance, and so, AI is still being developed to new heights. One aspect of AI that has been worked on a lot is text processing models and human behavior. Recently, OpenAI unveiled their human-like chatbot called ChatGPT–a revolutionary text-processing chatbot. In response, Google also released its own language processing model called Bard AI

In this article, we will check what these two technologies are and how they differ from each other.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI chat bot. However, that is a gross generalization of this tool. It is actually a text processing tool that is powered by OpenAI’s Large language model (LLM) called GPT 3.5 (Generative Pretrained Transformer). GPT 3.5 is an upgrade to the previous model called GPT-3, however, unlike GPT 3, it is not available on its own. Instead, it is packaged with other services, which in this case is Chat GPT.

GPT 3.5 is a huge model with approximately 175 billion parameters. It has been trained on an enormous amount of data using what OpenAI calls “Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback” or RLHF

Basically, in simple terms, humans provided feedback to the model while it was training to make it behave as closely to human beings as possible. And we can only say that OpenAI was more than successful with this venture.

When ChatGPT was unveiled, it took the world by storm and started a new clash between the technology giants. It pressured Google so much that it quickly unveiled its own version called BardAI (although it is not available to the general public yet).

Uses of ChatGPT
We could gush about ChatGPT for a long time, but the most effective way of telling you how amazing it is is to just show you.

1. Conversation

In this GIF, you can see that we asked ChatGPT how could we showcase its abilities to other people. In response, it gave us an amazing well rounded reply that highlights its capabilities with an amazing brevity.

And this is not even the end, you can ask ChatGPT to roleplay with you, or write while mimicking a character or certain accents.

And it does all of this in real-time! The only real limitation that ChatGPT has is prompt that you provide to it. So, in reality, it's just your imagination that is limiting the tool, and not the tool itself.

2. Information Gathering

ChatGPT is also perfectly capable of providing you with information about world events, and history, and even giving solutions to problems. However, the database that it was trained on cuts off in 2021, so it cannot tell you anything beyond that. However, even with this limitation, this is an amazing product.

3. Programming

Programmers use it to troubleshoot and diagnose faulty code all the time. Writers use it to create outlines, get ideas, and even research their topics. It can even provide code for simple things.

4. Text Manipulation

Since ChatGPT is powered by an LLM, it is more than capable of text manipulation. You can use it to summarize, paraphrase, and otherwise alter text quite easily. For example, if we provide it with a passage from this article, and tell it to paraphrase it for a second grader, it will do so.

ChatGPT is capable of rephrasing sentences in as many ways as you can think of. That’s why some people use it to deal with plagiarism that occurred due to a similar writing style.

5. For Search

Recently Microsoft has announced, ChatGPTs integration with their own search engine (Bing). Basically, it will allow people to search for information and get results from Bing in a conversational tone.  You can read more about it in this article.

So in summary, ChatGPT can be used for many things, and these are just a few use cases.

What is Bard?

Bard AI is basically Google’s answer to ChatGPT whose enormous success made it a very real threat to Google’s monopoly on the search engine business. Bard AI is still experimental and is not yet available to the public. That’s why there is not much information about it and most things you will read are just speculation or promises by Google.

Bard AI was developed using an experimental LLM called LaMDA or Language Model for Dialogue Application. LaMDA is primarily a statistical model, the way it creates text is different from GPT.  That is why it is capable of creating “casual dialogue” or less tight dialogue.

Currently, Bard is available for only a few beta testers. Unfortunately, we could not get access, so we cannot provide you with first-hand information.

With Bard, Google aims to enhance its search and make it capable of giving the user a straight answer in a conversational manner, no matter what the topic may be.  It seems that Bard may be integrated with the Android operating system as well since it is touted to have Personal AI assistance capabilities.

Currently, the version of LaMDA used for Bard is a smaller version otherwise known as a lite model. This is limited to the testing phase. Google is actively taking feedback from the beta testers to improve its AI and roll out a consumer version as soon as possible.

Uses of Bard AI

Since we haven’t used Bard ourselves, we can only tell you what others claim it can do. According to the testers, to use Bard, the user has to open the Google app on any smart device and click/tap on the “Chatbot” icon to get started. That opens a text box where you can enter your query and the “conversation” begins.

Given below are some things that it can be used for-

1. For Search
This one was obvious, Google is first and foremost the most powerful search engine. It makes sense that its AI chatbot/assistant will have search-enhancing features and capabilities.

In fact, Bard is primarily designed to aid search rather than do other things. So most of its capabilities lie in this area.

It can provide information as either a distilled and understandable text created by summarizing and paraphrasing some reputable sources. Or it can point you toward the best results that answer your query.

You can ask it questions and it will give you straight answers. Although its demo was not too promising, we can expect it to improve in the near future.

2. Automation and Recommendations

According to Google, Bard AI can be utilized for automating tasks and making them effortless. Google claims that you can ask Bard to do things like-
  • Plan a baby shower
  • Compare two similar things
  • What to eat for lunch if you provide it with a list of ingredients in your fridge
However, its automation is limited, as it cannot do things like writing code or writing articles from scratch (yet).

3. Assistant Capabilities
Bard is bundled with the standard Google assistant features and possibly more. You can use it to book appointments, set reminders, and create schedules. Of course, all of these features will be enhanced by the Chatbot features of Bard.

Unfortunately, that’s all we know about Bard for now. Until it has been released commercially, we cannot say anything for sure. These three things are what we know from what Google itself claims, and have shown off in its demonstration.

What Are the Differences Between ChatGPT and Google Bard AI?

While ChatGPT and Bard AI may seem like they are very similar, they do have their individual differences. Let's check them out-

Conclusion
In summary, we can only wait and see what the future holds. Currently, ChatGPT is a clear contender for the best chatbot. Its only drawback is that its information is not up-to-date. However, it seems that may not be the case anymore as GPT 4 seems to be just around the corner.

When Google releases Bard, we will see how the landscape changes and what is the future of search engines. Currently, Bing is seeing newfound success due to the ChatGPT integration, Google aims to emulate and supersede that success as well.

For now, if you want to get on this bandwagon, your best bet is ChatGPT and Bing.
